Paris – the basics
Show notes
Arriving and travelling: Tip for booking your train ticket to Paris: also check connections and fares on the French SNCF app, which can sometimes give you different results and fares than searching on Deutsche Bahn. When booking your ticket, make sure you have a reservation on the TGV; a ticket alone does not work here.
The metro: Tickets are available from ticket machines, they are also valid for the bus, but you cannot combine the same ticket, you can either only use it on the bus or only for the metro. The day ticket is worthwhile for six or more journeys a day. Alternatively, if you travel a lot but can't manage the six journeys a day: the carnet, the ten-trip card.
Cycling is highly recommended, and there are more and more well-developed cycle paths along the Seine. The easiest way to hire a bike is vélib: bikes and e-bikes are available at over 1400 stations. You have to register online in advance, a deposit of 300 euros is required for each bike rented and a 24-hour pass costs from 5 euros.
Our favourite districts for walking are:
the Marais, which we have recorded a podcast episode about, listen to that too!)
Montparnasse - here you finde the famous catacombs of Paris, which we also have a podcast episode about.
the Quartier Latin (Latin Quarter)
For a beautiful view: The classic, of course: you should book your tickets for the Eiffel Tower online in advance. Time slots are available (and always booked out quickly) four weeks in advance. You have the choice between tickets to the 2nd and 3rd viewing platform, for the latter you have to book the lift, up to the 2nd you can choose whether you want to walk or take the lift. Info and tickets: https://www.toureiffel.paris/de
Tour Montparnasse: After the Eiffel Tower, this 210 metre high black giant is the tallest building in the city. The office tower has 56 floors and the great thing about the viewing platform at the top: You have the Eiffel Tower in the picture. Tickets are best booked online here. Address: 33 Av. du Maine
Without a ticket, without a reservation: The roof terrace of the Galleries Lafayette. 40 Bd Haussmann, 75009 Paris, France
Here you can also enjoy a special view from the inside: On a glass skywalk that takes you very close to the famous Art Deco dome, tickets and information can be found here.
Finally a tip for all who love sweets: The classic when it comes to macarons is Ladurée: the Ladurée family founded their first macaron shop over 150 years ago, the address of the main store is: 75 Avenue des Champs Elysées.
